French at a Glance: Phrase Book & Dictionary for Travelers (Barron's Languages at a Glance)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (October, 1992)
Authors: Gail Stein and Heywood Wald
Average review score:

An essential tool!
I have purchased many language pocket guides, and this one is by far the greatest. The book follows the actual schedule of the traveler. The beginning section of the books concentrates on arrival at the airport, customs, transportation etc. Then the book concentrates on lodging and meals. There are also helpful shoppers guides, social guides(nightclub converstaion), and emergency guides. From asking directions or buying stamps to going for medical treatment, the book covers all aspects of a travelers anxiety. Lastly, the book focus's on the pronunciation of the words as well. Having studied French for a few years, I have come to the conclusion that french words can be very difficult to pronounce for the average non french speaking reader. This book will help you articulate your french almost as well as a native french speaker. It's an essential tool for all levels of communication.

THIS IS THE BEST FOR NON-FRENCH SPEAKERS
This is the best book for people who are non-native french speakers. It has everything from how to talk to a doctor to how to convert from American clothing sizes to European. We used this book when we travelled around France for two weeks and in every instance, it was useful. For every word/phrase in the book, it even tells you phonetically, how to say it.

The Hero's Trail: A Guide for a Heroic Life
Published in Hardcover by Philomel Books (September, 2002)
Authors: T. A. Barron and Robert Coles
Average review score:

Hero's Trail
When you think of a hero, someone like King Arthur, Han Solo, or Clint Eastwood comes to mind. Yet, it is more often than not someone who you might not notice who is truly a hero. In this book, the author concisely illustrates from legend and reality the true nature of a hero, defining the qualities of perserverance, kindness, and courage, etc. that set a hero apart from the crowd. While many of the people he uses will be familiar, such as Esther, Princess Leia, Anne Frank, for example, some of the real life heroes are people that have been ignored. He presents role models for not only children, but for all people to strive and emulate in their lives. You never know when you might be called upon to be one, for as one of his examples, Princess Leia said, "They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally, they became heroes."

Encore!
The Hero's Trail, by T.A. Barron, is a book about a series of people who, through strength, morality, and perseverance, manage to become heroes. Primarily dealing with ordinary people who turn into heroes when the time is right, it involves such people as Tiare Marie Wells, who saved the life of a ice fisherman who would've otherwise drowned and Ben MacDonald, who survived in the wild for over two months by living with a female badger. It also deals with people who overcame massive obstacles to do what they loved, such as Stephen Hawking, who overcame ALS to become one of the most renowned scientists in the world. It also details fictional characters such as Peter of Holland, who plugged a dyke with his finger and saved his entire village and Frodo, who risked everything to save his land from Sauron by destroying The One Ring.
If The Hero's Trail has a weakness, it is that it is too short. Barely a hundred pages long, it could easily be finished in a couple of hours. I would've loved to read more about heroes and for it to have involved some of my personal favorites such as Michael Jordan, who was rejected by his basketball team as a weakling. However, this shouldn't prevent you from enjoying this wonderful book.

Horace Fully Parsed Word by Word (Horace Odes, Books 1 and 2)
Published in Unknown Binding by Bolchazy Carducci (April, 2003)
Author: Horace
Average review score:

Complete with grammatical and syntactical notes
Compiled and edited by LeaAnn A. Osburn, Horace Fully Parsed: Word By Word is a scholarly text that presents the classical Latin text of Books One and Two of Horace's Odes, complete with grammatical and syntactical notes for each word, explanations for historical, mythological, and geographical references, literal translations, and more. A welcome addition to personal and academic Latin Studies collections in general, Horace Fully Parsed is an invaluable reference for every teacher and student of Horace's enduring work.

Tool for Deeper Understanding
Horace was one of the greatest lyric poets of Rome, succeeding Vergil as poet laureate. His work contains layers of meaning, expressing his own sentiments through different personas. However, before a class can begin to tap into the wealth of understanding, they must first grasp the translation of his work.

"Horace Fully Parsed" is a wonderful tool for teachers to help students first untangle the grammatical side of Horace. With long sentences that often have subject and verb separated by many lines, the literal translation can be extremely difficult. Teachers new to the rigor and demands of an AP Latin course would especially find this text useful, as it defines each word in Horace's odes, along with its syntax and use. It is the perfect reference to help students who are struggling to figure out the order of words in Horace's poetry. The back of the book has literal translations for all of Book I and II of Horace's odes, piecing together the grammatical analysis.

This grammatical analysis of Horace's odes empowers teachers to encourage their students to look beyond the grammatical difficulty of Horace. While the sentence structure itself reflects the depth of this poetry, only when students look farther into Horace's odes will they begin to appreciate the artistry of Horace's craft.

Keys to Parenting a Child With Cerebral Palsy (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (September, 1997)
Authors: Jane Faulkner Leonard, Margaret E. Myers, and Sherri Lynn Cadenhead
Average review score:

You'll like it
As the disabilities host on Bellaonline, I recommend this book. This book covers Cerebral Palsy, and what it is like to have a child with cerebral palsy. It talks about the family dynamics, how to encourage your child to be independent, how to handle friends, and how to discuss the disability.

I'd recommend this book to both parents and educators.

An Excellent Resource for Newly Diagnosed "Families"
As a mom of a 16 month old with moderate CP, I found this book to be a great starting place. It will not overwhelm you with all the "bad stuff" but introduces you to what life may be like with a CP child.

It also discusses how having a special needs child will mesh within the family, including dealing with extended family, siblings and future siblings (this was the only book I read that discussed this issue), schooling, etc.

Keys to Parenting Your Four Year Old (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (August, 1997)
Author: Meri Wallace
Average review score:

My sanity has been regained!
Out of complete desparation, I ordered this book. I'm pretty sure it was sent from heaven. It made me understand that I am not the only parent dealing with these problems. It gave great insights and great advice. Best of all, it was a quick read - it gets right to the point! A must for all parents!

This book helped our family keep a positive perspective!
Just when we thought we couldn't take another day of complaining, whining, hitting, sibling rivalry, arguments, frustration, etc, etc, we found this book and saved our sanity. Not only do the chapter "Keys" put a 4 year old's behavior into perspective, but, it also offers very helpful ways to manage the developmental phases they go through.

Keys to Parenting Your One-Year Old (Barron's Parenting Keys)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1992)
Author: Meg Zweiback
Average review score:

Better than all the the rest
As a working mom I don't have time to read very much, but I know it's important to really understand what is going on with my child as she develops. This book is great, and the next book about two year olds is even better. It is so helpful to understand why some issues are so challenging at this age and to get ideas for what to do!

excellent for both parents
I loved this book, but even better it was the only book I could get my husband to read and he really liked it too (I could just mark a couple of short chapters and he didn't have to read everything.) We are doing a much better job as parents now that we agree more about what is "normal" for a one year old!
